Let’s begin with, what is anthropology?
Anthropology is a holistic discipline that analyses the human condition (past, present, and future) to understand and share with others an explanation of who we are, why we do what we do, and how to move forward toward common goals.
Cultural anthropology overlaps topics of history, sociology, psychology, political science, literature, technology, and other fields. It is a scientific study (yes, it is measurable in many respects) of the development of human cultures based on ethnographic, linguistic, social, and psychological data and analysis methods.
What distinguishes cultural anthropology is the investigative techniques of participant observation. Researchers live with and share the daily experiences of the people they are studying, often for years at a time.
My anthro hat is always on 👒, and I currently work in the digital space. It’s a vast place, like the ocean, with more that has been unexplored than has been.
Being betwixt and between, or liminal, is a powerful place for understanding.
Digital Anthropology…
…encompasses the entire gamut of human experience in the digital world.
We understand who we are in the mirror of the material world within which we are born and socialized.
But this world was never static.
Culture became more diverse and expansive through the explosion of consumer culture. This has now been extended by the further dynamism and diversity found in digital forms.
While the digital world may often be online, there is a material side to the world of ‘bits’: social platforms, digital content creation (memes, photography, reels), virtual banking, blockchain, online shopping, virtual reality, etc.
TLDR; I study the evolution of human identity and the transformation of community as we embrace digital connectivity on a global scale. I believe technology should be designed to benefit society, not just wealthy Big Tech owners. I look for opportunities to use digital tools to foster human connection in meaningful ways.
